Planting a Tiny Forest with Plan-T: The Miyawaki Method

At Plan-T, we believe big change starts small—sometimes as small as a single sapling! Our mission is to bring vibrant, biodiverse forests to urban areas in Dallas, Texas, using the Miyawaki Method, a revolutionary approach to planting tiny forests. This method mimics natural ecosystems and helps trees grow faster, denser, and more resilient than traditional reforestation efforts.

So, how does it work? Let’s break it down into simple steps:

Step 1: Survey the Land and Choose Native Species

Before planting begins, we study the soil and climate of the site to understand what types of plants will thrive best. The key to a Miyawaki forest is biodiversity, so we select only native species—trees, shrubs, and groundcover that naturally belong in the Dallas area. Native plants support local wildlife, require less maintenance, and adapt well to the climate.

Step 2: Prepare the Soil for Maximum Growth

Healthy forests start with healthy soil. We enrich the ground by loosening compacted earth and mixing in organic matter like compost and mulch. This boosts water retention, aeration, and nutrient availability, giving young trees the best possible start.

Step 3: Plant Densely, Just Like Nature

Unlike traditional tree planting, where saplings are spaced out, Miyawaki forests are planted densely—about 3 to 5 trees per square meter! This close planting mimics how forests naturally grow, encouraging trees to compete for sunlight and grow 10 times faster than conventional tree plantations.

Step 4: Mulch and Water for Early Growth

After planting, we add a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds from taking over. Since Miyawaki forests are designed to become self-sustaining after a few years, we only water them regularly for the first two to three years until they become established.

Step 5: Let Nature Take Over

Once the trees start growing, nature does the rest! Within three years, these tiny forests become completely self-sufficient, requiring no maintenance. Over time, they attract pollinators, birds, and small mammals, creating a mini-ecosystem in the middle of the city.

Join Us in Growing a Greener Dallas

At Plan-T, we’re committed to creating a greener, healthier Dallas, one tiny forest at a time. Want to get involved? Whether you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or bringing a tiny forest to your community, we’d love to hear from you!
